Hybrid rice irrigation and nitrogen management boost yields and profits.
The researchers conducted an experiment to find the best ways to save water and manage nitrogen for hybrid rice grown using a method called system of rice intensification (SRI). They tested different irrigation schedules and nitrogen management options on rice growth and yield. They found that irrigating the rice at 2 days after disappearance of ponded water resulted in the highest rice yield. Using 100% recommended nitrogen dose along with beneficial bacteria and plants like S. aculeata also increased rice yield and profitability. The best water productivity was achieved when irrigating at 8 days after disappearance of ponded water, while the highest profitability was seen with irrigation at 5 days after disappearance of ponded water.
