New maize hybrids show intolerance to high plant density, impacting yield.
Maize hybrids in West and Central Africa were studied to see how they respond to different plant densities and nitrogen levels. Early-maturing hybrids performed better than extra-early ones in various environments. The hybrids didn't need more than 90 kg of nitrogen per hectare to grow well. Both types of hybrids didn't like high plant densities, which affected their yield and other traits negatively. The best results were seen at around 90 kg of nitrogen per hectare and 66,666 plants per hectare. The study suggests that maize hybrids in the region need to be improved to handle high plant densities better.
