COVID-19 Survivors Face Alarming Semen Impairment, Raising Fertility Concerns
After recovering from COVID-19, about 25% of men had semen quality issues, with some being azoospermic or oligospermic. The study tested samples from 43 men, with the virus detected in saliva, urine, and semen of a few individuals. Interestingly, their female partners did not contract the virus. Most men had high levels of a protein called IL-8 in their semen, pointing to inflammation. The severity of COVID-19 was linked to the semen problems. However, the small number of participants might influence the study's strength. The findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 can be present in semen but are not a common occurrence once men have recovered from the infection.
