User preferences drive sanitation technology adoption in South Africa.
Sanitation policy is shifting towards understanding what people want in their sanitation systems. A study in South Africa found that people's preferences for sanitation technology and how it's set up affect whether they use it. Users who have private toilets have different reasons for using them compared to those who share communal facilities. The design of the sanitation system also plays a big role in whether people accept and use it. Seven key design features were identified as important for users.
