Urban expansion in Southwest China linked to decline in ecosystem health.
Urban expansion in Southwest China affects ecosystem health. The study looked at 438 cities and found that as cities grow and change, ecosystem health declines. Larger cities have worse ecosystem health, except for very large cities. Cities with organized layouts are better for ecosystems, especially in service-based cities. Fragmented urban cores harm ecosystem health in karst cities more than in other cities. Understanding these effects can help plan cities more sustainably.
