New study identifies high-risk areas for flooding in Northern Nigeria
The upper Benue River watershed in Northern Nigeria was studied to understand its hydrological processes and prioritize conservation efforts. Using digital maps, researchers analyzed the watershed's characteristics and identified key areas for conservation. They found the watershed has a dendritic drainage pattern with over 4800 streams totaling 30,000 km in length. The watershed is in an old stage of development, and specific sub-watersheds were identified as high priority for flood and erosion risk mitigation. This information can help decision-makers plan for sustainable watershed management.
