Survey data aligns with tax data, revealing top income sources.
The study compared income data from surveys and tax records in the US, Germany, and France. They found that above the 90th percentile, the income estimates from both sources matched well. The differences in income composition were mainly due to non-labor incomes like self-employment. The gap between survey and tax data may be because of income re-classification or difficulty in capturing top 1 percent incomes.
