State-owned banks in China can boost efficiency by reducing input sizes.
Efficiency and productivity in Chinese banks were studied from 2007 to 2019. Major commercial banks were compared using a special method. Stock-holding banks were less efficient than city and state-owned banks. State-owned banks could improve by reducing input resources. Agricultural Bank of China's branches in different regions had different efficiency issues. Some regions need to focus on improving technical efficiency, while others should work on scale efficiency. This study can help bank managers and policymakers in China evaluate competitiveness.
