Gender wage gap partially explained by social capital differences among peers.
Gender wage gaps are not fully explained by existing research. Social capital, like having similar friends, may play a role. Using UK data, researchers found that differences in network structure can explain up to 15% of the gender wage gap. Having more male friends seems to be the main factor. Other social capital measures don't seem to matter much. The difference in how social capital affects wages for men and women is not significant.
