Climate change threatens vital links between land and sea ecosystems.
Coastal areas where land meets the ocean are important for moving materials between ecosystems. Changes in climate can affect how these materials flow from land to sea, impacting marine life. Scientists studied the temperate rainforest along the northeast Pacific coast to understand these connections. They looked at how plants and water move nutrients from land to sea, and how this process might change with climate change. The researchers identified gaps in our knowledge and suggested five important research areas to better understand how coastal ecosystems are linked.
