Whiting fish in Black Sea feasting on own kind, study finds.
Whiting fish from the Black Sea were studied to see what they eat. Researchers looked at the stomach contents of 762 fish collected over a year. Most stomachs were empty, with horse mackerel, anchovy, and whiting being the main prey. Horse mackerel was the favorite food in spring and summer, while anchovy was preferred in autumn and winter. Whiting also ate other fish like sprat and goby, but horse mackerel was the top choice. Surprisingly, whiting sometimes ate other whiting, with cannibalism happening most in spring. Whiting could eat fish up to 37.6% of their length and 11.2% of their weight.
