Financialization leads to decline of hegemonic powers through class struggle.
The article compares how financialization affected the decline of British and American powers in the past. It argues that the traditional views are limited because they focus only on the state and separate economics from politics. By using a new theory called neo-Gramscian, the researchers show that class struggle leads to financialization, which can cause the downfall of a powerful group. The British decline was due to outward financialization, while the American decline involved inward financialization leading to changes in society. This study looks at the years 1870-1890 and 1970-1990 to understand how financialization impacts social relations, ideology, and institutions.
