Chinese tuna longline fleets in Pacific Ocean causing high bycatch rates.
Tuna longline fishing by Chinese fleets in the Pacific Ocean catches a lot of non-target species, like sharks and bony fishes. The study looked at data from 2010 to 2018 and found that 30.4% of the catch was bycatch, with 15.8% being thrown back. The bigeye tuna fleet had higher rates of bycatch and discards compared to the albacore fleet. Bycatch hotspots were identified in different areas of the Pacific, with marine turtles and mammals mostly caught in the Tropical Pacific, and seabirds in the Temperate Pacific. Measures like releasing bycatch alive and reducing fishing in high bycatch areas are needed for conservation.
