Dam reservoir improves water quality in polluted river, benefiting ecosystem and communities.
The dam reservoir in Komorów positively affects the water quality in the Utrata river. Water below the reservoir has higher dissolved oxygen levels and lower total phosphorus concentration. However, the river is still polluted with biogenic compounds and COD levels exceed safe limits. Chemical oxygen demand is higher below the reservoir, but there is no difference in ammonia and nitrate ion concentrations before and after the reservoir.
