Colonial investments shaped African development through strategic coastal trade hubs.
Colonial investments in former British and French African colonies were unevenly distributed due to natural harbors and trading posts. These factors influenced where colonial states invested in infrastructure, health, and education. Distance from trading posts also played a role in how investments spread within each colony. Contrary to popular belief, natural resources and ethnic characteristics did not have a significant impact on investment patterns. This suggests that economic factors were the main drivers of regional and ethnic disparities during colonial and contemporary times.
