The standard 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) measurement used in water treatment plants can lead to oversizing of processes. Carbonaceous BOD (CBOD5) is a better indicator for sizing aerobic treatment processes. Nitrogenous oxygen demand should be used for nitrogen removal processes. Using CBOD5 for sizing and evaluating treatment processes gives a more accurate picture of performance and capacity.
