Green roofs slash indoor temperatures by up to 6°C in semi-arid regions.
Extensive green roofs in semi-arid regions like Central Argentina can help cool buildings. A study compared a room with a green roof to one with a regular roof. The green roof kept the inside surface cooler by 5-6°C. It also had better temperature control and blocked heat better during the day and night. The green roof was more effective at stopping heat from escaping at night. This was because of evaporation, heat conduction, and the local climate. Green roofs can be a good way to keep buildings cool in hot, dry areas.
