Coastal development and climate change threaten beach resilience in Yucatan.
The study looked at how human activities affect the ability of beaches to withstand storms on the northwestern Yucatan coast. Researchers analyzed beach and dune shapes, along with storm data, from 2015 to 2020. They found that beaches with less human impact had higher resilience to storms, while degraded dunes and coastal structures reduced resilience. Overall, beach resilience has been increasing over the years, but varies along the coast. This means that some areas are better at recovering from storms than others.
