Product perishability significantly impacts the design of agri-food supply chains. A new model was created to plan these chains, considering factors like capacity, transportation, and shelf life. The study found that designing supply chains with perishability in mind improves economic performance, especially for short-shelf-life products. It also helps determine the investment needed to extend shelf life while remaining profitable. This model can be useful for both new and existing supply chains.
