Building a sluice in Poyang Lake can save its deteriorating ecosystem.
Water conservancy projects like hydroelectric stations can impact ecosystems. The Three Gorges Dam has caused Poyang Lake's water level to drop, making the dry season longer. To address this, a sluice may be built to regulate water levels. By using a model to simulate different water flows, it was found that without intervention, Poyang Lake's ecosystem will deteriorate. However, building a sluice and ensuring connectivity for migratory creatures can improve the lake's ecosystem quality. The study also suggests using ecosystem stability and regime shift indexes for future assessments.
