Alpine steppe soil complexity impacts water retention and plant growth.
The study looked at soil particle sizes in alpine areas near the Yangtze River in China. They found that the soil in alpine meadows had finer particles compared to alpine steppes. Alpine steppes had more complex soil structure and higher variability. The size of soil particles was related to the amount of clay, silt, and sand in the soil. Sand content was the main factor affecting how soil particles were distributed.
