The goal of the study was to improve the detection of rail track edges for train safety. The researchers used a method called the Hough transform to find the edges of the track in images. They first used a Canny operator to detect edges, then identified lines in the edge image, and finally selected the longest lines as the track outlines. By simulating this method in Matlab, they found that it produced good results in detecting rail track edges.
