Invasive alien fish species threaten native fish populations in southern Iraq.
Alien fish species in southern Iraq are harming native fish populations by increasing in number and outcompeting them. Researchers collected fish samples from three sites over a year and found 10 alien fish species dominating the abundance, with Prussian carp, Blue tilapia, and Redbelly tilapia being the most common. These invasive species are causing significant changes in the composition, diversity, and abundance of native fish populations in the region.
