Access to Low-Quality Early Childhood Programs Linked to Declines in Child Development
Early childhood development programs in The Gambia were studied to see how to improve access and quality. Two experiments were done: one increased access to services, and the other improved service quality. The results showed that neither intervention improved child development overall. However, the experiment that increased access to lower-quality services actually led to declines in child development for children from less disadvantaged households. Existing early childhood centers were found to improve language skills more than community-based alternatives.
