Students' writing skills improved by using Theme and Thematic Progression patterns.
This study looked at how students organize their ideas in recount texts by focusing on Theme and Thematic Progression. Researchers analyzed texts from students at different achievement levels and found that students used three types of Themes (topical, textual, interpersonal) with topical Theme being the most common. They also identified two main patterns of Thematic Progression (Theme reiteration, zig-zag) used by students to structure their ideas. The use of cohesion devices like ellipsis, reference, and conjunction helped make the flow of the text clearer. The study suggests that teachers can use Theme and Thematic Progression to improve students' writing skills and recommends further research on different genres or spoken texts.
