Fiji Leads Global Efforts in Addressing Climate Change Disasters
The article discusses how UN human rights monitoring bodies were active in addressing disasters and climate change in 2019. Small Island Developing States, like Fiji, played a key role in these efforts. While no major instruments were adopted, UN Special Procedures were very active. Fiji made recommendations to 23 countries in 2019 regarding disaster risk management and gender-based violence in the context of disaster risk reduction. The Universal Periodic Review process was also highlighted, with Fiji receiving comments on its own human rights practices.
