Groundwater depletion threatens water supply in southeastern United States.
Groundwater levels in the lower Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin are decreasing due to increased irrigation from the Upper Floridan Aquifer. A study used a computer model to predict the impact of more irrigation on groundwater levels and stream-aquifer interaction. The model showed that groundwater levels could drop by up to 2.38 meters, especially in areas with thinner aquifers. Stream-aquifer flux could also decrease by as much as 33%, with significant reductions in certain watersheds. The study identified specific areas most at risk from increased irrigation.
