Sugarcane farmers in Eswatini wasting water, hurting crop yields and profits
The study evaluated irrigation in sugarcane fields in Eswatini. They found that the current irrigation methods led to over-watering, especially during certain months. The centre pivot system was slightly over-irrigated, while the sprinkler system was adequately watered. Over-watering mainly occurred during the germination and establishment phases, rather than the growth phase. The researchers suggested modifying the irrigation schedule to better match the different stages of sugarcane development.
