India's renewable energy push could avoid building new fossil fuel plants
India aims to have over 400 GW of wind and solar power by 2030, with most from solar. Research shows that having solar make up only 25-50% of this target is cheaper for reducing carbon emissions. Contrary to what was thought, reaching high renewable energy goals in India won't require many new fossil fuel power plants due to the country's weather patterns. Having 600 GW of renewable energy, mostly from wind, can keep emissions below 2018 levels at a cost similar to fossil fuels. Using battery storage can help meet peak electricity demand without needing new fossil fuel plants, but only if costs are low.
