Trust in Relationships Varies Across Shared Goals, Study Finds.
Interpersonal trust can vary depending on the goals shared within a relationship. A new theory called the Interdependent Goal Model of Interpersonal Trust (IGM) suggests that trust levels change based on the importance of the goal. A study found that people trust their best friends more for important goals, and the friend's strengths related to the goal influenced trust. However, the friend's weaknesses did not affect trust levels. This research shows that trust can differ within relationships based on shared goals, highlighting the complexity of trust dynamics.
