Researchers mutated black gram seeds with sodium azide to create a mutant plant with five leaves instead of the usual three. This mutant matured faster but had lower yields. It was also resistant to yellow mosaic disease. The mutant's first pair of leaves had stems, unlike the parent plant. This mutant is being used in breeding experiments for further study.
