The study analyzed desertification in northwest China from 2003 to 2018. Severe desertification decreased while high desertification and non-desert areas increased. Precipitation was found to be the main driver of desertification, with land use change playing a significant role. Human activities, especially agriculture and water projects, were identified as key factors in combating desertification in the region.
