Toxic air pollutants found in industrial complex, raising health concerns.
The study analyzed BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene) levels in Seongseo Industrial Complex using canister-GC/MS. BTEX, present in the air, were sampled at 38 sites – 10 near sources and 18 at the boundaries. The average concentrations were 33 ppbv for benzene, 214 ppbv for toluene, 89 ppbv for ethylbenzene, and 77 ppbv for xylene. Toluene had the highest amounts at both types of sites. The incineration facility released higher toluene levels (220-350 ppbv). Ethylbenzene and xylene showed strong correlations between source points and boundary sites. These findings indicate that BTEX concentrations vary across the industrial complex and show a connection between emission sources and surrounding areas.
