High-intensity dairy farming boosts milk production in spring-calving cows.
The study looked at how changing the amount of pasture available in autumn and the intensity of farming systems affects the productivity of dairy cows. They tested different pasture availability levels and farm system intensities on 144 dairy cows over 11 weeks. The results showed that increasing pasture availability led to higher pregrazing herbage mass, but did not significantly impact overall pasture production. The high intensity farming system resulted in greater milk and milk solid yield compared to the medium intensity system. Overall, the study found that altering autumn pasture availability and farm system intensity can influence dairy cow productivity, with higher intensity systems generally leading to higher milk production.
