Mulching on forest roads slashes soil erosion, saving ecosystems from destruction.
Mulching on forest roads in the Hyrcanian forests of Iran helps reduce soil erosion. Different types of mulch cover, like wood chips and rice straw, were tested on slopes of varying steepness and road ages. Overall, mulch cover significantly decreased runoff and soil loss compared to bare soil. On cut slopes, wood chips were the most effective at reducing erosion, followed by sawdust and rice straw. On fill slopes, wood chips also performed the best. Erosion was higher on steeper slopes and decreased as the road aged. This study shows that using mulch cover on forest roads can effectively control erosion, especially on steep slopes prone to erosion.
