New stress-tolerant rice variety boosts yields, fights climate extremes in China.
Stress-tolerant rice varieties can help Chinese farmers increase their rice yield when facing extreme weather like droughts and floods. A study of 1,080 rice farms showed that farmers who used these new varieties saw a 7% increase in yield, while those who didn't adopt them could have had a 4% increase if they did. However, adopting these new varieties requires more knowledge, education, management, and higher seed costs. Public extension services could help farmers overcome these challenges.
