Euro Overtakes U.S. Dollar in Global Currency Race, Challenging Hegemony
The euro has become a strong international currency in just five years, overtaking the U.S. dollar in value of notes in circulation. It is eroding the U.S. dollar's dominance as a reserve currency by developing a solid financial market. However, the U.S. dollar still leads due to its long-standing use and larger, more liquid financial markets. Despite this, the euro has been gaining strength against the U.S. dollar since 2002.
