Polluted River Network Threatens Algal Bloom and Ecosystem Collapse
The water quality in Wenruitang River network areas was studied in 2010. The analysis of 6 hydrochemical variables at 39 sites showed that the water quality was poor, with high levels of N and P pollutants. Pollution levels varied across different parts of the river, with the third channel being the most polluted. Seasonal changes in water quality were influenced by rainfall, with heavy rains improving water quality. The ratio of N to P in the river network areas was suitable for algae growth, indicating conditions for algal blooms.
