Biochar Boosts Water Retention in Arid Soils, Reducing Evaporation
Biochar, a soil additive, affects water retention in sandy soil. Researchers studied four types of biochar from Hebei, China, in sandy soil to see how they impact water properties and evaporation. Biochar helps sandy soil absorb water better, but the water content ratio is lower than in non-biochar soil. With biochar mixed in, sandy soil's water percolation decreases gradually due to the different hydraulic properties. Biochar with larger pore volume and diameter helps retain more water. Fine biochar powder disrupts the pore structure, reducing water absorption and conductivity. Adding biochar powder to sandy soil doesn't reduce water evaporation losses on its own. So, using biochar in sandy soil can affect water retention and soil properties.
