Groundwater over-extraction in Nebraska threatens Platte River water levels.
The simulation showed that taking too much groundwater near the Platte River can harm the river over time. The study used a computer model to see how water moves between the river and the underground water. They found that if too much groundwater is pumped out, the river will lose more water each year. Different parts of the river interact with the groundwater in different ways - some parts give water to the river, while others take water away.
