Rapid urban expansion in Fuzhou threatens agricultural land and livelihoods.
The article analyzed changes in cultivated land in Fuzhou, China, from 1989 to 2005 using satellite images and GIS technology. It found that paddy fields and dry land decreased significantly during this period. The loss of cultivated land was mainly due to urban development and conversion to other types of agricultural land for economic reasons. Factors like population growth, economic development, and rural household benefits were linked to the decline in cultivated land. Despite efforts by the Chinese government, land policies were not effective in protecting cultivated land or controlling urban expansion in Fuzhou. The study suggests the need for further research to safeguard cultivated land and manage urban growth.
