Smallholder Farmers Empowered to Access Lucrative Global Markets Through Innovative Policies
Small farmers in Malawi face challenges accessing high-value markets for pigeonpeas. A study analyzed the pigeonpea value chain to find ways to help small farmers reach global markets. The analysis showed that small farmers struggle with limited market information and access to better pigeonpea varieties. Malawian exporters face issues with high freight costs and low grain quality. Improving market institutions, like the farmer organization NASFAM, could make producers more competitive.
