Melting glaciers in Tianshan Mountains threaten water supply for millions
The Snowmelt Runoff Model (SRM) was tested in the Gongnaisi River basin in China's Tianshan Mountains to see how well it could predict snowmelt runoff. The results showed that SRM performed well in this region, with high accuracy in simulating snowmelt runoff. The model was also used to predict how climate change could affect snow cover and runoff patterns. A hypothetical temperature increase of 4 degrees Celsius led to earlier snowmelt and changes in runoff timing. This suggests that climate change could significantly impact snowmelt runoff in the future, shifting the timing of water flow in the spring months.
