Sluice gate in estuaries causing sediment buildup and water pollution.
Construction of a sluice gate in the Xinyanggang Estuary in China affects sediment movement. The study found that during tidal cycles, there is strong resuspension and siltation of sediments. When the sluice gate is open, fresh water reduces sediment resuspension, but increased flow can lead to strong resuspension and sediment transport towards the river mouth. This process helps maintain channel depth.
