Oasis cities in Xinjiang, China have been expanding rapidly between 1990 and 2007. The study used satellite images and remote sensing to track this growth and found that economic development and urban administrative area size are major factors influencing expansion. It's important to plan urban growth carefully in arid areas to protect water and resources. Compact city layouts are better for the environment. Population growth and city expansion were not well-coordinated before 2000, but have improved since then. It's crucial to control city growth to ensure sustainability in oasis cities.
