Herbicide-resistant rice poses risk of gene flow to weedy varieties
Transgenic rice with herbicide resistance was studied in China to see how its genes spread to other rice types. The researchers planted different rice varieties near the transgenic rice and found that gene flow happened at low rates, mostly to weedy rice. The risk of gene flow was higher to weedy rice compared to improved rice and hybrids. The height of the rice plants affected gene flow, with taller plants having less spread. The study suggests that efforts should focus on managing weedy rice to prevent the development of resistant populations.
