The article examines productivity in different countries from 1980 to 2012 using a method called Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). They group countries by development level and measure efficiency and productivity changes over time. By adding energy and CO2 emissions into the model, they find differences in productivity levels and sustainability gaps between countries.
