Overgrazing in desert steppe stifles shrub growth, threatens ecosystem balance.
Long-term overgrazing in a desert steppe restricted the growth of shrubs. Researchers studied the effects of sheep grazing on shrubs in north China. They found that low grazing rates increased shrub growth, but high rates kept it steady. Different shrub species responded differently to grazing, with Artemisia frigida being the most sensitive. Grassland managers can use the right grazing rate to maintain a healthy plant community.
