Food prices have a big impact on conflict in African regions. When food prices go up due to harvest problems outside Africa, conflict increases. Regions with more agriculture also see more conflict with higher food prices. Previous studies that don't consider these external factors can give the wrong results. Time fixed effects in evaluations can also miss important baseline effects.
