Adult literacy programs in developing countries are not getting enough funding despite the high number of illiterates worldwide. While dropout rates have improved, the outcomes of literacy instruction are still not as good as expected. This could be because teaching adults to read is harder than teaching children due to how our memory works. Learning to recognize complex patterns quickly is a challenge for adult learners.
